Nintendo Switch Review: A Monster’s Expedition (Through Puzzling Exhibitions)

November 05, 2024 0 Comments

If you’re anything like me, you know that not all puzzle games feel truly relaxing. Some are more like a mental marathon, leaving you exhausted instead of refreshed. But A Monster’s Expedition (Through Puzzling Exhibitions) on the Nintendo Switch was exactly what I needed. It is a game that combines clever puzzles with a sense of calm, light humor, and pure charm.

Draknek & Friends have crafted a delightful adventure that invites you to slow down, get curious, and solve puzzles at your own pace; all while enjoying a lighthearted take on the quirks of human artifacts.

In this review, I’ll break down why A Monster’s Expedition is worth adding to your Switch library, especially if you love games that soothe the mind as much as they engage it.

Story & Setting: A Puzzle Game with Personality

At first glance, A Monster’s Expedition feels like a cozy escape into nature. You play as an endearing little monster exploring an open-world museum of human artifacts scattered across charming islands. Each island holds its own exhibition, with descriptions that offer a whimsical look at everyday objects from a monster’s perspective.

Personally, I loved this twist on storytelling. The museum artifacts make the puzzles feel purposeful and give you a reason to keep moving forward. Each new artifact had me smiling, guessing at what bizarre or funny take the game would give on it. This quirky narrative style was refreshing and kept me invested in the game beyond just solving puzzles.

Gameplay: Simple Mechanics, Endless Challenge

The core gameplay mechanics of A Monster's Expedition are elegantly simple. Your task is to connect islands by rolling logs into the water, creating pathways to continue your expedition. Early puzzles ease you in, teaching you the basics of rolling, pushing, and placing logs. But as you explore, the puzzles become increasingly intricate, demanding creativity, logic, and sometimes, a bit of trial and error.
What makes A Monster's Expedition unique among puzzle games on the Switch is its open-world layout. You’re not bound to a single path—you can choose various routes, revisiting islands or trying new areas as you please. This freedom makes the experience feel open-ended and more personal, giving players control over their own adventure.

Visuals and Atmosphere: Cozy and Calming

The visuals are a huge part of what makes this game so special. A Monster's Expedition has a soothing art style featuring soft, pastel-colored landscapes and minimalist island designs that look fantastic on the Switch in both handheld and docked modes. Paired with a gentle soundtrack that melts into the background, the visuals create a calming atmosphere that’s perfect for unwinding.  I could relax and try new strategies, knowing I could always change course without losing progress. As someone who often feels pressured by timers in other games, this felt like a breath of fresh air.

Accessibility: A Game that Respects Your Pace

One of the best aspects of A Monster’s Expedition is its accessibility. There are no time limits, no penalties, and you can undo moves as much as you like. The game autosaves after each action, so you’re free to try new strategies and solve puzzles without the stress of losing progress. It’s ideal for casual players who may want a low-pressure game to relax with, as well as puzzle fans who enjoy tackling tricky challenges at their own speed.

For me, the gameplay was deeply satisfying. I loved that the game allowed me to experiment and figure things out without holding my hand. I could take my time and play in small bursts, which was perfect for unwinding at the end of the day. Plus, the open-world design meant I could move on when a puzzle felt too tricky and return later. It’s a game that respects your time and curiosity.

Why A Monster's Expedition is a Must-Have for Puzzle Lovers

After spending hours with A Monster’s Expedition, I can confidently say it’s a game worth having. Whether you’re a serious puzzle fan or just want a relaxing experience, this game ticks all the right boxes. The puzzles are clever, the humor is charming, and the atmosphere is perfect for unwinding. It’s a game that feels like it’s always giving back to the player, and it makes every minute spent worthwhile.

Pros:

  • Clever puzzles with lots of variety
  • Open-world exploration that’s unusual for puzzle games
  • Charming humor and unique storytelling
  • Relaxing visuals and peaceful soundtrack

Cons:

  • Some puzzles may feel similar if played in long sessions

Final Rating: 9/10

A Monster's Expedition on Nintendo Switch is an absolute gem—perfect for anyone craving a relaxed, immersive, and brain-stimulating experience. This delightful game is as satisfying to play as it is to look at, making it a fantastic addition to any Switch library. Dive in, get curious, and let the adorable monster take you on an expedition you won’t soon forget!

Keycap Series: Featuring Artists of the Month

October 30, 2024 0 Comments

Enjoying art and fun shouldn't come with a hefty price tag; it can be both high-quality and affordable.

Welcome to this monthly new series where I will be spotlighting talented keycap artists whose work I have come across and purchased from them as I love their designs. With reasonable pricing and shipping options that have proven worthwhile to me, here I am sharing them with you. Whether you're in search of intricacy, uniqueness, or affordability in artisan keycaps, I hope you find inspiration and the opportunity to support these creators.

Getting into the hobby and into the rabbit hole of artisan keycaps can be a bit overwhelming for the pocket as one artisan keycap can cost as much as a whole set, with some costing more than S$80 (not including shipping fees yet). And let's not get started on shipping... If you are in Singapore or South East Asia, sometimes shipping from overseas sellers are more than S$20-40+!😵

Guide: The Best Mechanical Keyboards for Newbies

October 24, 2024 0 Comments

What is the appeal of mechanical keyboards?

So you may be wondering what is the appeal: these keyboards are built to last, with switches meant for millions of key presses, and often time have a faster response and better accuracy for gaming and typing.

The laptop membrane keyboard did it's job, there was really nothing to complain. While I could accept the membrane keyboard which is on the laptop, I stumbled into the world of mechanical keyboards and have never looked back since.

[Mechanical Keyboard Switches Explained: Your Complete Guide to Types and Characteristic]

I enjoy discovering the different types of switches (i.e. tactile and linear, I don't really like clicky) along with their different sound profile and typing experience they offer. The various designs of keycap sets and artisan keycaps also opened a whole new world for me.  The best part of mechanical keyboards is that they are customizable from the switches to the keycaps all the way down to the internal parts to make it feel and sound a certain way.

If you think mechanical keyboards are too noisy, with the exception of click switches, there are silent switches or linear switches are no more louder than your colleague typing very furiously on their membrane laptop keyboard.  Just saying... 😂

Typically, a budget mechanical keyboard can range from as low as S$40 to as much as $200 or more. The keyboards I am about to introduce to you today also range within that price range. So far, I have not yet gotten one which is above S$300, but it is not impossible one day (I'd really have to love that keyboard a lot to get it).

For a newbie looking for a budget-friendly mechanical keyboard, there are several options available that provide a good balance of quality and affordability.  If the idea of opening a board up to mod it with tape etc, or a switch to lub it is a little too advance for you,  and all you are looking for is to either use the keyboard out of the box—with maybe the occasional keycap or switch swap— then this list might be useful for you. It is based on my own experiences and what I have gotten so far in terms of mechanical keyboards.

Sumreda SK82:

This mechanical keyboard is the most basic of them all which cute details like a paw or ghost detail, and has a knob.

[Review: SK82 Mechanical Keyboard - A Blend of Functionality and Style on a Budget]

The SK82 mechanical keyboard is usually priced between US$45-60 on AliExpress, with variations depending on the model and features, such as wired or wireless options. This pricing positions it in the lower mid-range for mechanical keyboards, reflecting its balance of build quality, features, and versatility.

Features:

    1. Lightweight and tri-mode (Bluetooth, 2.4ghz and Wired).
    2. Has a knob and cute details.
    3. Hotswappable - switches and keycap can be swapped. But do note hat you can only use 3 pin switches.
    4. Tenkeyless (not have a 10-key numeric keypad on the right side).
    5. RGB light effects.

CIDOO ABM066 Alice Layout:

If you want to take up the challenge of starting to build you own mechanical keyboard, the CIDOO ABM066 might be a good choice to start. Or if you prefer they also have aready made one for you with switches and keycaps. It is available on Amazon from US$70+.

  5. RGB light effects.

MACHENIKE K500W:

The quality of the keycaps and switches are comparable with the ones which came with the RK71

The MACHENIKE K500W  Mechanical Keyboard is a good option for gamers and typists alike who are looking for something affordable and user friendly. Its sleek design, reliable  switches, customizable RGB lighting, and hot swappability (for both switches and keycaps) make it a standout choice in the crowded mechanical keyboard market.

Features:

    1. Lightweight and more compact than a full keyboard.
    2. Has a tri-mode and wired version.
    3. Hotswappable - switches and keycap can be swapped.
    4. Has numpad.
    5. RGB light effects.

As always, availability and pricing may vary, so it's a good idea to check current reviews and prices from reliable sources before making a purchase.

When choosing a mechanical keyboard, consider the type of switches you prefer (linear, tactile, or clicky), whether you want backlighting, and any specific layout preferences (full-sized, tenkeyless, 60%, etc.). Additionally, read user reviews to get an idea of the typing experience and build quality.

Remember that personal preference plays a significant role in choosing a mechanical keyboard, so if possible, try to test different switch types before making a final decision. The keyboards listed above should provide a good starting point for newcomers to the mechanical keyboard scene.

Keycap Series: October Artist Featuring O_OOHKeycap

October 21, 2024 0 Comments

O_OOHKey, who is located in South Korea, and specializes in resin artisan keycaps and loves cats! If the name sounds familiar, then it is because I won a giveaway from them before and loved their Ninku character so much that when I saw it available in Neon Pink... I had to get it. 😂

Although I wish the currency conversion was kinder to me, the invoice for  Neon Pink Ninku was USD$65, including shipping. I paid S$91.85 via PayPal (no thanks to currency conversation😭). To date this would be the most expensive keycap I've gotten. 😅

Divoom Ditoo Plus Review: A Retro Pixel Art Speaker That Combines Nostalgia with Modern Tech

October 17, 2024 0 Comments

In the midst of trying to glam up my desk setup, I came across the Divoom Ditoo Plus: a Bluetooth retro-styled speaker which brings pixel art and fun to live on your table. As usual, I got it when it was on sale during the Christmas Shopee sale last year.  I finally had time time this year to open it up and use it. It also did help that my new IKEA table arrived, so it made it the perfect timing to do some desk re-organizing.

Unboxing

If you’re searching for a Bluetooth speaker that’s more than just a device for playing music, the Divoom Ditoo Plus is a standout option. This retro-styled speaker doesn’t just offer impressive audio quality—it’s also a unique piece of decor that brings pixel art and 80s nostalgia to life.

In this review, we’ll explore what makes the Divoom Ditoo Plus a must-have gadget for your desk or living space.

Eye-Catching Design and Color Options

The first thing you’ll notice about the Divoom Ditoo Plus is its retro design, reminiscent of vintage arcade machines and early computers. With its small, colorful screen, chunky mechanical keyboard, and playful joystick, the Ditoo Plus is definitely a conversation starter.

It’s available in a variety of colors, so you can pick one that best suits your style:
  • Pink: Fun and playful, perfect for a pop of color.
  • Sky Blue: Calming and cool, ideal for a soothing aesthetic.
  • Green: Trendy and fresh, for a modern vibe.

These colors enhance the device’s appeal, making it not only functional but also a personalized piece of decor that fits seamlessly into any environment. It also comes with a mic

Impressive Audio Quality in a Compact Size

Despite its small size, the Divoom Ditoo Plus delivers surprisingly robust audio performance. Whether you’re listening to soft background music while working or turning up the volume for a small gathering, the Ditoo Plus handles it with ease. The sound is clear and balanced, with just the right amount of bass to fill a room without overwhelming other frequencies.

The Ditoo Plus also doubles as a Bluetooth speaker, allowing you to connect it to your smartphone, tablet, or other devices with ease. Its reliable Bluetooth connectivity ensures that your music plays without interruptions, and the built-in sound effects and visualizations make the experience even more engaging.

Packed with Features Beyond Music

The Divoom Ditoo Plus is more than just a speaker—it’s a multifunctional device designed to enhance your daily routine. It features an alarm clock, planner, and even a sleep aid function, making it a versatile addition to your desk or bedside table. The Ditoo Plus also supports notifications for social media, messages, and calls, so you can stay connected without constantly checking your phone.

The real magic happens when you pair the Ditoo Plus with the Divoom app. Through the app, you can explore a wide array of pixel art designs, create your own animations, set custom alarms, and share your creations with the Divoom community. This level of customization adds significant value, transforming the Ditoo Plus into a creative outlet as well as a practical tool.

Battery Life and Charging

The Divoom Ditoo Plus offers around 8 hours of playback on a full charge, which might be a bit underwhelming. While this is adequate for most daily uses, it might fall short if you plan to use it as your primary speaker throughout the day. Fortunately, the Ditoo Plus charges via USB-C, ensuring a quick recharge time so you can get back to enjoying your music and pixel art displays without much downtime.

Whether you’re looking for a stylish speaker to enhance your home office or a unique gift for a tech-savvy friend, the Ditoo Plus is a fantastic option that won’t break the bank (too much).

Is the Divoom Ditoo Plus Worth It?

The Divoom Ditoo Plus is a perfect blend of nostalgia, creativity, and modern technology. Its retro design, combined with impressive sound quality and a host of customizable features, makes it a standout gadget for anyone who loves to mix style with functionality. It also makes a pretty centerpiece for your desksetup or for any desksetup videos.

Here are some Pros and Cons to help you make that decision.

Pros:

  • Retro design with multiple color options
  • High-quality sound in a compact size
  • Extensive features including alarm, planner, and social media notifications
  • Customizable pixel art display via the Divoom app

Cons:

  • Battery life could be longer for extended use
  • Some features rely heavily on the companion app
  • Although the price is reasonable, for the functions and battery life it might be a little pricey for something other gadgets or your mobile phone might be also able to do (just not as pretty or fun).

Overall, I am happy with my Divoom Ditoo Plus since I did get it during the sales for S$100 (about US$75), plus it was during Christmas so it was nice litter reward for myself. 😊

If you’re looking for a Bluetooth speaker that offers more than just music playback, the Divoom Ditoo Plus is an excellent choice. Its combination of retro charm, practical features, and creative possibilities make it a must-have for your desk, bedside table, or living room. Get it if you see the value in having one, otherwise there are other Bluetooth speaker options all there that might suit your needs better.

It averages from around S$120 (US$139.99), depending on which platform you get it from. It's available from Shopee, Amazon and the Divoom online store. Remember there are sales and vouchers you can use, so do check out the platforms and see if the price is right for you. If you are getting any products from the Divoom online store don’t forget to use the code MYGAMINGDIARIES for 10% off.

Review: GMK87 Mechanical Keyboard Barebones Kit

October 10, 2024 0 Comments

Mechanical keyboard enthusiasts are always on the lookout for the perfect build that offers both flexibility and performance. The GMK87 Barebones Kit is designed to cater to those who appreciate customization without sacrificing quality. With its solid construction, hot-swappable, and sleek aesthetics, this kit ensures that you can fully personalize the look of your keyboard to match your desk setup or aesthetic preference.

Pricing

In terms of affordability, the GMK87 Barebones Kit is priced at around S$70+ (about US$55+). This puts it in the mid-range bracket for mechanical keyboard kits, offering excellent value for its premium build and customizability. Whether you’re a hobbyist looking for your next project or someone seeking a quality mechanical keyboard experience, this price range is competitive for the features provided.

Where to Buy

The GMK87 Barebones Kit can be purchased from:

  • For those in Singapore and South East Asia
    • Shopee: Select from a wide range of online sellers and use vouchers and coupons. Worth to check it out especially during the sales period.
    • Lazada: Select from a wide range of online sellers and use vouchers and coupons. Worth to check it out especially during the sales period.
  • For international
    • AliExpress: For those in and outside of Singapore, AliExpress offers various options which which suit the wallet.
    • Amazon: Occasionally, you can find mechanical keyboard kits available through Amazon.

I had gotten my GMK87 Barebones kit (Black) from Lazada for about S$40 (~US$30) during the sales period. There is also a White version but I decided to go with a different color this time since I already have quite a few white mechanical keyboards. If I knew the black version would be such a magnet for fingerprints I would have chosen the white one. But that is a smaller little downside as the board on the whole is pretty solid and good.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The GMK87 Barebones Kit comes packaged neatly, with all components carefully organized. Right out of the box, the kit feels good and not too heavy at about 0.7kg, since the case is made out of polycarbonate. The minimalist design ensures it will fit well in any workspace, and the TKL (Tenkeyless) layout provides a balance between functionality and compactness, perfect for those who want more desk space without giving up essential keys. The screen and knob are a nice tough to the mechanical keyboard.

Unboxing and Build

Build Quality and Design

Polycarbonate is a durable and resilient material. It’s resistant to impact and shattering, making it a good choice for keyboards that might experience rough handling or frequent transportation. However, it is generally not as robust as metals like aluminum or steel, so while it can withstand everyday use, it may not be as resistant to heavy impacts or extreme conditions.

What I do appreciate is that being a polycarbonate keyboard, the GMK87 is typically lighter than its metal counterparts. This makes it easier to move and adjust but may also contribute to a less substantial feel compared to the heavier keyboards. The heaviest mechanical keyboard I have is the Rainy75 (at almost 2kg), followed bu the Flesports MK750. That said, the GMK87 may be lighter but it is still a good build based on it's materials and feels more substantial than mechanical keyboards made out of solely plastic such as my Sumreda Sk82.

Although the black version I got is a magnet for fingerprints, it does have that sleek aesthetic appeal. I would say that the hot-swappability is a major selling point for those who love to experiment with different switches. It supports both 3-pin and 5-pin switches, which means you can try out a variety of mechanical switches (linear, tactile, or clicky) without the need for soldering. This makes the GMK87 perfect for both seasoned builders and newcomers who want to explore the world of mechanical switches.

Typing Experience

While the GMK87 is a barebones kit and does not come with switches or keycaps, the flexibility in choosing your preferred components is one of its greatest strengths. Pairing it with Gateron Brown switches, for instance, could provide a satisfying tactile experience for those who enjoy feedback without the loud click of blue switches. The hot-swap feature makes this easy, allowing for switch changes based on your typing needs.

I had paired mine with the Pantheon "This Switch Is Called" Linear Switches, along with cute shark keycaps.

[Pantheon “This Switch Is Called” Linear Switches: A Deep Dive into Smooth Typing]

The keyboard also comes equipped with stabilizers, which are pre-installed and surprisingly well-lubed out of the box. They help reduce rattling on larger keys like the spacebar, providing a quieter and more consistent typing experience.

Customization and Compatibility

Customization is where the GMK87 shines. Beyond the switches and keycaps, the barebones kit allows for full RGB backlighting with customizable lighting modes that can be programmed through software. Whether you prefer subtle under-glow or vibrant colors, the lighting on this kit is versatile and adds a fun touch to the overall look

It also has a knob for volume and a screen which you can use the Image Tool to add your own .gif animations to truly make the keyboard your own.

Overall, the GMK87 Barebones Kit offers a fantastic foundation for building a custom mechanical keyboard. Being relatively lightweight, hot-swappable, and full RGB customization make it an excellent choice for both new builders and experienced enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re a casual typist or someone who spends hours a day at the keyboard, the GMK87 gives you the flexibility to craft the exact typing experience you’re after. For anyone seeking a relatively durable, sleek, and highly customizable TKL keyboard kit, this is one that should not be missed.

Sound Check: Rainy75 Pro (Yellow)

October 07, 2024 0 Comments

At S$162 (US$123), my Rainy75(Pro) is currently one of the the higher priced budget keebs (and heaviest at almost 2kg!) I have in my collection. But it was a happy buy for sure.

The stock keycaps and switches sound so good, and feels so smooth to type on.

You can read more about the review in the link below.

[Exploring the Rainy75 Mechanical Keyboard: A Game-Changer in Affordable Luxury]

If your are interested in getting your very own Rainy75,  it is available at Shopee for about the same price, from the same seller who has a presence on Lazada as well. Since I had vouchers for Lazada, I got it there instead for S$162 (shipping was "free") for a Yellow color Pro version. 😁

If you have not signed up for Shopee and want to get S$5 off your first order, sign up here 😊 Alternatively, if you already have an account but have not bought anything yet, you can still get S$5 off your first order with this code 7L6EM9H
Do note that if you are viewing it on mobile it will check if you have the app first, if you do it opens in the app, just click ok and you would get to the listing page. Happy Shopping!

Of course not all the colors were available, pink for example was out of stock on both Lazada and Shopee, but Amazon has the pink variant for about S$222 (US$170). If you are interested in getting the a Rainy75 and have no access to Shopee, depending on the version you can get it from Amazon from about US$159, or from AliExpress

Have you gotten the Rainy75, or would you be getting it? If the answer is yes, do let me know your thoughts on it in the comments below!

October 02, 2024 0 Comments

AnyKey aka any____key makes their adorable iterations of their Bear character called Dori available through Raffle Sales (with Google Forms) which are announced on their Instagram and discord server. I first came across their adorable Dori creations on Instagram and was immediately smitten with the beary cute designs!

Anykey announces the latest sales and updates to shipping, as well as posts about past creations on their Instagram and their Discord, so do check them out!

One thing to note is that shipping of the adorable Dori creations take about a month or so to be made and then shipped out.

Previously I had gotten their Lime Boom! Dori and Hibernation Dori, then I saw the delicious Egg Dori and just had to get him. The invoice for Egg Dori was USD$50, including shipping. I paid S$70.57 via PayPal (no thanks to currency conversation😂). You can tell I am becoming a fan of Dori the bear... This already is my third Dori (and I am not going to stop)!

Keycap Series: September Artist Featuring pyuyucaps

September 29, 2024 0 Comments

September brings the cozy vibes of autumn and the magic of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. So to celebrate, instead of the usual 1 artist, 2 artists who capture the essence of the season will be featured this month.

Last week we had Jen, all the way from Australia, the wonderful lady behind kōyōkeys. This week we have pyuyucaps who is right across the causeway from Malaysia. Her adorable creations range from about US$30-55+ (about S$40-70+) and shipping to Singapore is US$15 (about S$20)

What I appreciate about pyuyucaps is that she has an online shop as well as raffle sales and commission open on her Instagram page, so there are options. Her creations on her Big Cartel shop are simply adorable and have a nice clean finish to them.

When I saw 'YU' bunny (玉兔), I simply fell in love with the sweet pink and adorable design!

So into the shopping cart 'YU' bunny (玉兔) went along with her friends, and they soon made their way to me. 😆 It was a pleasant surprise that instead of delivery via the post office it was via a courier and arrived in a faster time (less than a week).

The shopping experience was straight forward and simple. It would be nice if the currency could be auto-converted to reflect the currency I am using but that was not a deal breaker. I appreciated the online store experience:

  1. Paypal was a payment option.
  2. No need to create an account just to make purchase. As long as you have your Order number, you are able to keep track of your order easily.
  3. Once the order was confirmed and on the way, the tracking ID is provided.
  4. Updates from the courier when the parcel is out for delivery.

Now on to the fun part… Unboxing the happy mail of  'YU' bunny (玉兔)  and her friends!
I adore the packaging and the nicely tied bow on the box. Also... the cute stickers and seal mascot are simply adorable, don’t you think? 😍
