From Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 to Note 14 4G: When It Was Finally Time to Upgrade

Sometimes a phone doesn't stop working all at once, but it slowly starts showing little signs that it might be time for an upgrade. That was what happened with my Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 which y started having problems with its mobile network. At some point, the network simply stopped working properly.

Since the phone was already around three years old, I decided that rather than spending money trying to revive it, it was probably time to look for something newer.

When My Redmi Note 12 Started Losing Network

The biggest problem was the mobile network. The phone would sometimes lose its connection completely, and restarting it or switching airplane mode on and off did not always solve the problem.

There are several possible reasons why an older phone can start experiencing network problems. Software glitches, incorrect network settings, SIM-related issues and problems with the mobile network itself can all cause a phone to lose signal.

But repeated drops can also be a possible culprit. A hard impact can potentially affect internal components, including the antenna or connections used for cellular communication.

In my case: It was difficult to tell whether the network problem was software-related or caused by physical damage.

Can a Phone with Network Problems Still Be Used?

Before replacing an older phone with network problems, there are a few things worth trying.

Restarting the phone, switching airplane mode on and off, checking the SIM card, installing available software updates and resetting the network settings are some simple troubleshooting steps.
You can also try the SIM card in another phone. If the SIM works normally there, it gives you a better indication that the problem may be with the original phone rather than the network or SIM itself.
A network settings reset can also help if the problem is caused by corrupted or incorrect settings. However, if the phone has suffered physical damage, software troubleshooting obviously cannot fix a damaged internal component.

My takeaway: If your older phone is still usable apart from occasional network problems, it may be worth troubleshooting first. But if the problem keeps returning and the phone is already several years old, replacement can make more sense than paying for a repair.

Why I Chose the Redmi Note 14 4G

I wasn't really looking for the most powerful phone or the latest flagship. This was going to be more of a spare phone, so I wanted something reasonably modern, reliable and affordable.

The Note series has always been positioned as a value-oriented range, which made it a pretty sensible choice for what I needed.

The best part of this upgrade was actually the price!

I managed to find the Redmi Note 14 4G on Shopee for around S$180. That was already a pretty good price, but I also had credit card vouchers that I could use on the purchase.

And after applying those vouchers.... I paid only S$85!

The Only Downside? Lime Green

By the time I ordered it, the only colour left was the lime shade. It wasn't exactly the colour I would have picked if I had all the options available, but for that price I am not complaining.

Since this is going to be more of a spare phone than my main device, colour wasn't really a deal breaker. There are plenty of cases which can be used to give it a more aesthetic look.

Why Having a Spare Phone is Useful

I used to think having a spare phone was something you only needed if your main phone suddenly broke. But having one around can actually be surprisingly useful.

For emergencies

Phones are one of those things you don't realise how dependent you are on until you suddenly don't have one. A spare device means you still have a way to make calls, access important apps and stay connected if your main phone suddenly stops working.

For travelling

A spare phone can be useful when travelling, especially if you want to use another SIM or eSIM for mobile data without constantly changing things around on your main device.

For testing apps and services

Having another Android phone also gives me a separate device for testing apps, websites and services without affecting my main phone.

As a backup camera

A second phone can also be surprisingly handy for taking photos or videos. It can act as another camera for content creation, an extra angle when filming or simply a device you don't have to worry about using.

When your main phone is charging

Sometimes you just want another device nearby while your main phone is charging or updating. It is a small convenience, but one that can be useful.

Was it Worth Upgrading?

Rather than spending more money trying to repair an ageing phone, finding a newer Redmi Note 14 4G for S$180 was already appealing. Getting it down to just S$85 with my credit card vouchers made the decision even easier.
