Meet the Epomaker RT85: My New Everyday Keyboard Crush

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from diving into the world of mechanical keyboards, it’s that Epomaker knows how to create something that’s both functional and delightful to use. The Epomaker RT85 is one of those keyboards that instantly caught my attention with its unique design. After spending time with it, I can confidently say it’s become one of my new everyday favorites.

Before I begin the review, a big thank-you to Epomaker for sending this keyboard over for review. As always, all opinions here are my own.

First Impressions: Compact but Powerful

The RT85 is a 75% mechanical keyboard that hits a sweet spot between functionality and desk aesthetics. It keeps the essential keys you need, cuts out unnecessary bulk, and adds a little personality with its joystick and customizable mini screen. Weighing at about 1kg, the build feels solid enough to stay firmly in place during heavy typing or gaming sessions but not so heavy that it feels bulky on your desk. Moreover, the clean design fits beautifully into my setup with a bit of retro vibe.

In terms of build quality, the TH99 features a durable ABS plastic case paired with a PC (polycarbonate) plate, creating a solid yet slightly flexible foundation that complements its gasket-mount design. This combination helps soften keystrokes while maintaining a sturdy, well-balanced typing feel. The double-shot PBT keycaps add to the experience: they are lightly textured, resistant to shine, and comfortable to type on even during long sessions. Together with the keyboard’s layered sound-dampening materials, this thoughtful construction enhances the TH99’s acoustics, delivering a pleasantly muted sound profile and an overall quality feel that exceeds expectations for its price point for under US$100.

Connectivity-wise, it’s loaded: the wired (USB-C), Bluetooth, and 2.4GHz wireless modes mean I can easily switch between my work laptop and gaming PC. Also with its  8000 mAh battery, it really goes a long way. I only need to recharge it occasionally, even with RGB lighting on.

The Typing Experience: Smooth, Responsive, and Satisfying

The unit I received came equipped with Epomaker Wisteria V2 Linear Switches, which immediately won me over. These switches are buttery smooth with just the right amount of resistance. They produce a soft “thock” sound profile that’s incredibly pleasing. They are not too loud, not too muted, with just the right amount of feedback that makes every keystroke feel intentional.

Typing on the RT85 feels natural and comfortable, even during long sessions. The stabilizers are pre-lubed, so larger keys like the spacebar and enter key sound and feel consistent. It’s the kind of board that makes you want to keep typing; whether it’s an article, a long email, or a few hours of creative writing.

I also love how the keyboard sounds out of the box: that gentle, balanced acoustic really elevates the typing experience. It’s not hollow or pingy, which is impressive for a stock setup.

My Typing Experience with V2 Switches

Between the Epomaker Wisteria Linear Switches on my Galaxy100 and the Epomaker Wisteria V2 Linear Switches on the RT85, the Epomaker Wisteria V2 Linear Switches have been a very pleasant upgrade. The actuation force is lower (38 gf vs ~45 gf), so my fingers feel much more relaxed when I type. The lightweight feel gives me a sense that the keys respond more immediately, and there’s less fatigue over time.

Acoustically, the Epomaker Wisteria V2 Linear Switches are a little quieter and more mellow on bottom-out compared to the original Wisteria Linear Switches. That said, the structure (POM + PTFE stem, pre-lubed) still gives a satisfying, smooth travel. Overall, I’d say the Epomaker Wisteria V2 Linear Switches sound more delicate.

The light diffuser in the  Epomaker Wisteria V2 Linear Switches also makes a big difference to how the RGB looks: keystrokes are more “lit up” in a subtle way, and it feels more premium when I’m typing under low light.

What’s Different About Wisteria V2 vs Wisteria Linear

Since the RT85 came with Wisteria V2 Linear Switches, I wanted to highlight how they differ from the original Wisteria Linear version and why this update genuinely enhances the typing experience.

Screen Functionality & Retro-Inspired Design

One of the standout features of the Epomaker TH99 is its built-in screen, which instantly adds both functionality and personality to the keyboard. Visually, the screen gives the TH99 a subtle retro vibe which is reminiscent of old-school digital displays and classic desktop tech. It feels like a modern keyboard with a nostalgic twist, blending contemporary features with a throwback aesthetic that would stand out on any desk setup.

Functionality wise, the screen isn’t just for looks. It provides quick access to essential settings such as connection modes, battery status, lighting effects, and brightness levels.

What I really appreciate is the flexibility in how you control the keyboard. Basic FN key functions, like changing RGB lighting modes, colours, and brightness, can still be done directly from the keyboard using key combinations. Alternatively, you can make the same adjustments through the on-screen menu, or using the joystick. Whether you prefer quick keyboard shortcuts or visually navigating the screen, there’s more than one way to customize your experience.

Of course, it would have been a fun touch if animated GIFs could be added and displayed on the screen; something that would have further enhanced the retro-meets-modern vibe. But as it stands the screen is still a thoughtfully designed feature that elevates both the look and usability of the keyboard.

What Makes the RT85 Stand Out

There are a lot of keyboards out there that try to be “do-it-all,” but the RT85 actually delivers:
  • Tri-mode connectivity: Bluetooth, 2.4GHz, and wired
  • Large 8000 mAh battery for long wireless sessions
  • Hot-swappable switches (and keycaps) so you can easily change to your preferred feel or sound
  • Joystick and customizable mini screen for added flair and functionality
  • RGB lighting that’s vibrant but not overwhelming
  • Ergonomic 75% layout that saves desk space without sacrificing essential keys

It’s a rare mix of practicality and fun. I love that all the things you need like choice of connectivity (e.g. wireless and Bluetooth), and position of the wireless dongle with its own storage slot are all located in the front unlike the usual mechanical keyboard designs where the turn on/off switch and connectivity options are located at the side or back. This makes it so much more pleasant to use, no more reaching out to the side or behind to connect or get the dongle (if the mechanical keyboard has a dongle slot). Additionally, the joystick adds a surprisingly direct and useful layer. It feels intuitive and responsive, allowing quick adjustments without having to memorize the FN key combinations to adjust the volume and brightness, as well as toggling between lighting effects with ease.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

While the RT85 impressed me, there are a couple of small caveats worth mentioning:
  • The case is sturdy, but it's not a full aluminum build so it's not as hefty as higher-end custom boards.
  • Battery life can dip if you leave RGB lighting on full brightness in wireless mode.
  • The software is decent but could use more refinement for power users who want deeper customization.
Still, none of these points took away from my overall experience. For most users, especially those who want a reliable, stylish, and great-feeling keyboard, the RT85 is a fantastic pick.

After using the Epomaker RT85 for both work and play, I can honestly say it's the perfect middle ground between performance and aesthetics. It is ideal for anyone who values a great typing experience with thoughtful design.

I love that Epomaker continues to innovate and bring personality to their keyboards. So if you’re someone who loves mechanical keyboards with personality, and you want something that feels satisfying to type on every day, the Epomaker RT85 might just become your next favorite board too. It's also the perfect fit if you’re looking for something that feels premium without breaking the bank at around US$85.99 (even lesser when there are sales! i.e. US$73).
